The “Caring Activities” section on the Medical School application is one of the most ambiguous. Most applicants take it to mean that they should work in a soup kitchen for “X” amount of hours and then they will have “Cared” enough. Admissions committees, however, love to talk about your caring activities in interviews, so you should make sure you volunteer in an area that you are passionate about. Volunteer doing something that you can talk to someone about, and doing something that you enjoy.
Lubbock has numerous opportunities for individual volunteering. Many require a time commitment and some require applications so you’ll have to be proactive to pursue these opportunities.
The Volunteer Center of Lubbock is a great place to get started. They have a fairly comprehensive list of the charitable and philanthropic organizations in Lubbock that are looking for eager volunteers. Some well known volunteer organizations in town include:
- Meals on Wheels
- Salvation Army
- Lubbock Impact
- Big Brother Big Sister
- American Red Cross
- American Cancer Society
- Numerous Nursing Homes
- Etc.
